Janet Fulton

Janet gained a First Class BA Honours Degree (Music) at Huddersfield and the Prize for Distinction Brought to the Institution, followed by the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Studies in Music Performance RNCM (Honours).


Janet has been Principal Percussionist with the Manchester Camerata since 1985. She has been a freelance orchestral musician playing Timpani and Percussion with the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, RLPO, CBSO, Opera North, Welsh National Opera, Northern Sinfonia, Northern Ballet Theatre Orchestra and similar organisations regularly since 1981.


She is a soloist, both solo recitals, including the Bridgewater Hall International Series and as guest artist.

As a Music Practitioner, Janet has worked in 100's of schools and institutions in England and Wales, delivering workshops for Manchester Camerata.  Privately she works regularly as Musician in Residence working with every child in the school. As an Animateur she has worked with the Cumbria Youth Orchestra, working in tandem with the conductor Alice Farnham on improvisation. She trains teachers over the whole of Yorkshire in using music to teach different subjects. Janet is Honorary Vice President of Sowerby Music Society in recognition of her support for Music for Life, which brings music to 100's of children including special schools in North Yorkshire for 16 years. With the Hallé she delivers workshops for the SHINE project worked with under-privileged children in Bolton.


Janet works alongside a Music Therapist with people with dementia, is a music practitioner with teenagers with aspergers, and leads regular sessions for adults with moderate and severe learning difficulties. In 2012 she was awarded the position with Music And The Deaf of Conductor and Practitioner in the North West.


Janet tutored the National Youth Orchestra of Wales for 13 years and continues to tutor several youth orchestras. For 15 years she examined for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, which became Trinity Guildhall. She teaches and lectures at four universities, and is External Examiner for a fifth.
