Musical Storyland  has been awarded The Kay Benbow Award for Best Pre-school Children's Programme. Daniel Whibley was commissioned by the BBC to compose original music for CBeebies' newest musical series, following on from the enormous success of the CBeebies musical story of The Gingerbread Man.

Musical Storyland reimagines ten different children’s favourite fairy tales and traditional folk tales from around the world, brought to life by Daniel's magical, atmospheric music. Daniel's compositions are performed live in the studio by musicians from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and special guest musicians – some with instruments from other countries and cultures – including Sidiki Dembélé, Zi Lan Liao and Sean Chandler.

They feature live action and animation and are narrated by a host of stars, including: BBC Radio 5 Live presenter, Nihal Arthanayake; international storyteller, Jan Blake; and CBBC and Eastenders actor, Molly Rainford.

The stories are: Three Billy Goats Gruff, Jack and the Beanstalk, Ananse and the Monkeys, The Great Race, The Little Fir Tree, Hare and Tortoise, The Enormous Turnip, The Stone Cutter, Three Little Pigs, and The Baobab Tree.

Daniel said, "It was fantastic to work alongside the talented team at the BBC and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, as they brought my compositions to life in this unique way." He continues, "It is wonderful to know that not only are they going to be enjoyed by children and their families at home, but the collaboration has also provided schools with classroom resources alongside the programmes."

The whole team had a wonderful time at the awards ceremony, celebrating their win with some Manchester caviar (aka mushy peas!) served with a fantastic pie, and chips!

“The talented team behind the scenes have brought these stories to life in a unique way and we are sure children and adults alike will enjoy this truly magical series of programmes”
